Acid Stained Concrete – Not a DIY Project for the untrained Professional

Why some home improvements should be left for a professional.

Concrete acid staining is the new trend to improve their basements for homeowners with concrete floors. Many homeowners are trying to take on the project themselves as a DIY project. However, this can be one of the most harmful and damaging projects to their health. While the end result is a decorative piece that is an asset and focal point to your home, undertaking the project can have long-term hazards if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Stained Acid Concrete – DIY vs Professional Benefits

There are two ways to acid stain concrete: do it yourself or have it done by a professional. Even if the homeowner has done acid staining treatment in their home already, there is a special preparation machine that will strip off a small layer of concrete so that the staining process can begin properly.

The machine is only owned by companies that specialize in this. There are only 75 of them in the country and they are unique due to their diamond cutting blades. Produced in Canada, they have the power and technology to strip the smallest layer of concrete off the floor. This process helps prepare the surface before acid staining to eliminate residue so the minimize mess.

Performing DIY concrete acid staining requires tools, precision, and patience. The best way to understand how to acid stain concrete is to simply research it and grasp how it works and what the acid does. It’s important to know what may damage the concrete, resulting in having it redone by a professional, which will inevitably cost more money.

decorative interior floor

The most harmful part for homeowners that are doing this themselves is the unknown acidity and reactions of the products. The acid can be detrimental if it touched anything that it can damage. From here, homeowners must fathom the process of acid staining their own floor and have already planned what to do if something goes wrong.

Hiring a professional to acid stain concrete floors is the way to go, especially because they (usually) know what they are doing! Unless homeowners know what they’re doing with acid staining concrete and understand the process, it is more worth their money to let a professional who has done it for many years, like Concrete Restoration Systems, do it.

With professionally done concrete staining, the floors will be resistant to damage and only require easy maintenance. Due to their polished feel and look, it just takes a broom, vacuum or other cleaning supplies to clean up a spill. It has been said that a concrete floor that has been beautifully transformed through acid staining will last up to a century, whereas carpet must be cleaned every other year and replaced once or twice in a decade. One of the best benefits of concrete acid staining is the versatile look, specifically an industrial look. Concrete can be given certain stains that will make it look dry instead of a wet look, which some people may not like. With a dry appearance, it may look more welcoming and homey.

Concrete Acid Stain Companies – The best option for a great look (and for your health)

How Stained Concrete Creates a Lasting Impression

Concrete acid staining has become popular and a trend of today’s house alternative flooring market. Many homeowners have concrete stained their floors, making it into their dream home. The question is whether it’s more cost-efficient to do the project yourself or to hire a professional. It all depends on how much experience you have to do it yourself and the cost of the supplies. Professionals that specialize in acid concrete staining have all the tools and experience to get the job done right, but it may be more cost-efficient without a professional if the homeowner knows what they are doing.

There is a lot of work and tools that go into staining concrete, not to mention that once it is done, it is done. There is no going back except paying more to have it ground down. Any homeowner should really think about the cost to them of staining concrete themselves and the extra cost if they mess up. In addition, some acid staining tools such as rollers, squeegees, and acid sprays not only require professional experience to do right but can also be harmful to the homeowner’s home if done incorrectly. If the homeowner has the budget for all of the chemicals and tools, they should also plan a budget of the cost to fix anything that they don’t have the knowledge to fix.

acid-stained-basement-floor16

To perform a rustic acid-washed stain on concrete flooring, the estimated cost is around $0.30 per square foot for DIY homeowners. This is inexpensive, but what is more worth it – taking the chance of doing it yourself and potentially paying up to a thousand dollars for a professional to fix it, or letting a professional handle it from the beginning?

Because there are so many chemicals involved in concrete acid staining, it is so vital to make sure the acidic liquid does not come in contact with anything it should not be touching (i.e. furniture, walls, floors than being damaged from the acid). This could simply cost any homeowner thousands of dollars in damage that they could have spent on a professional to do it correctly. When in doubt, it is always best to seek a professional, like Concrete Restoration Systems, who has years of experience in the industry and knows exactly what they are doing to do the best job. One of the most harmful effects to a home from acid staining is all of the chemicals being exposed in the home. This can be dangerous to the health of anyone just by breathing it in and especially for pets due to the aftereffect of chemicals roaming around the home.

Figuring out the best way to stain concrete both efficiently and financially will require a lot of research and professional help, but it’s doable and affordable in the end if done right. It’s important to know what you want and the cost of it. Widely known in Denver, Concrete Restoration Systems has served hundreds of people around the Denver Metro area and has a history of perfection and low prices with outstanding reviews. With nearly 40 years of experience, owner Dan Yalacki will make sure all needs are taken care of.

When is it too late to repair my driveway?

Identifying when your driveway is past repair versus resurfacing.

Colorado’s winter brings frigid cold temperatures, which can be detrimental to a homeowner’s home. Driveways are one of the most exposed parts of a home, which makes them prone to weathering damage like cracking and splitting. This can be very costly to repair and require a period of time to fix. As many of us know, homes often need repairing throughout the year.

So, when is it too late to complete driveway repair homeowners?

Waiting too long could be more costly and harmful to the driveway than you thought.

The most simple answer is once winter rolls around, it’s unfortunately too late for most driveways. It depends on what it is made out of, as some surfaces naturally last longer than others. Some driveways are tougher than others and may need less repair and maintenance. Additionally, the amount of snowfall causing freezing and thawing can harm the concrete. The best rule of thumb to go by is to seal it every two-to-five years depending on its current condition. If you are unsure of whether it needs repairing, it is best to get it inspected by a professional for a quote.

concrete stain-before

It is really important to start the repair process in the Spring or even the Summer. Homeowners planning to hire a professional for driveway replacement are advised to do it in the Summer versus Winter. Doing it in the summer will allow the concrete to settle and bond because the non-freezing temperature that winter brings will crack and split the concrete. This way the properties in the cement will have plenty of time to mend and bond together creating a very tight seal that ice and snow will have a hard time penetrating. If the driveway already has divots in it, freezing rain/temperatures will allow it to freeze and expand, creating more damage. The bigger the divot, the more costly to repair.

For some homeowners, repairing or replacing their driveway may not be affordable depending on the planned budget. In this situation, it’s best to talk to a professional concrete company – like Concrete Restoration Systems – that specializes in the restoration and resurfacing process about what can be done to make repairs on a more reasonable and affordable budget.

What if it is easier to mend cracks and divots with concrete mix poured over?

If it seems more practical and affordable to fill in the divots by pouring some concrete on it instead of redoing the entire driveway then consider this…

Any homeowner can buy some concrete mix from their local hardware store that just needs some water added to stir it up into a paste to fill in the cracks. This process also requires special mixers that can cost upwards to $100. Take a look at the driveway and count how many cracks need replacing. More than likely, the driveway could probably use an extra layer to seal in the remaining repairs. Better to be safe than sorry.

Homeowners, if you want to get your driveway redone because of cracks in the pavement or even just smoothed out again, give Concrete Restoration Systems a call and see what they can do for you. Getting this process done in the Spring or even Summer before colder temperatures hit in the Winter will be very beneficial in the long run. Whether it be new concrete with any choice of stain or simply resurfacing your current concrete into a beautiful cornerstone that will increase your curbside appeal, CRS will beat any price of replacing your concrete.

The Best Ways to Resurface Concrete

Ways to Repair, Resurface and Save on Your Driveway

When it comes to resurfacing a concrete driveway in Colorado, it is best to get it taken care of before winter. Once the weather gets cold and snow starts falling, any concrete driveway will take a beating due to the weathering. There are a couple of ways to resurface a concrete driveway. It all comes down to what the homeowners wants to do and what may be the most affordable option available to them. Concrete Restoration Systems is a well-known concrete restoration company that has been serving the Denver area for years turning worn down driveways and floors into brand new flooring.

One of the best ways to resurface a driveway is to get it professionally done with concrete resurfacing liquid. What makes this method so easy and efficient is that it can be poured down onto the driveway and smoothed out with a squeegee. It is important, however, to get it pressure-washed before to make sure there are no loose, cracked pieces of concrete that will get poured over and become permanently stuck. The ideal result is to replace the cracks with the liquid cement to reinforce its strength. A big benefit of this liquid concrete is that it is cheap and easy. Bags of this powder should cost no more than $20 and can be done by Concrete Restoration Systems for a very affordable cost. Any homeowner can easily do this themselves, but if they are not sure of how to do it or do not want to mess up and pay a fortune to repair it again, it is more than what is worth their while to call a professional company who will get it done for them affordably and with great quality.

Homeowners can save themselves lots of time, frustration and hassle by resurfacing their driveway instead of paying a fortune to have the slabs of concrete removed and replaced. Not only will that process take up to a month but also may hinder the landscape around the driveway. Resurfacing the driveway only takes about a day to do and will be ready to drive over without ruining it in no time.

Ensuring a high-quality finish to the resurfaced concrete will add longevity to it for years. SunColor Acrylic water-based finish is something that can be added to the finished concrete that will give it a beautiful shine and keep it protected against weathering and other accidental damage that may occur.

The best way for any homeowner to replace or get rid of their acid stain on the concrete is to have it ground down by a professional. Concrete Restoration Systems uses a special machine to do this that has diamond edge cutting technology that will scrape the stain right off. What is cool about this machine is that it was made in Canada and there is only 75 in the United States.

Give Concrete Restoration Systems a call today and see what they can do for you to transform your concrete driveway or concrete floors into brand new flooring with beautiful coloring. CRS has over 40+ years in the concrete staining industry and has satisfied many of their customers. When it comes down to the job, no one can beat their professionalism or quality.

Concrete Spalling in your Driveway

decorative-beforeAs shown in the photograph above, concrete spalling is the flaking off of the concrete surface. It looks like little tiny chips of the concrete coming off leaving a divot, usually about a 1/4” to a 1/2” in diameter and 1/4” to 3/8” in depth. At first, it appears to be isolated in areas of your driveway but quickly spreads to other areas like a rash gaining size and population.

Concrete spalling occurs from either extremely hot or extremely cold weather. Spalling can also occur during the concrete installation process if the concrete surface is overworked.

  • If the concrete was poured when the temperatures were expected to drop below freezing that night, the top layer of concrete freezes which causes the finish to be weakened and eventually flake off.
  • If the concrete was poured during extremely hot weather and is overworked or watered down by misting water on the concrete to get it finished, also compromises the strength and integrity of the concrete’s finish resulting in eventual failure and spalling.

Either way, the finish has been weakened and within a couple of years after installation will begin forming small 1/4” to 1/2” circles patterns in the concrete finish usually dozens of them in a single area. Eventually, these circles in the concrete pop loose creating divots that we call spalling.

We also mentioned overworking the concrete. Quite often Contractors will schedule several driveways to be poured in one day. Such as a subdivision development where several driveways are poured back to back. The concrete spinning in the trucks builds up friction causing the concrete to get hot and making set up quickly making it difficult to finish. This results in overworking the concrete finish and also will compromise the finish resulting in spalling.

Spalling of concrete is far more common than you may think, affecting 1 out of  3 driveways. You may have noticed this in your own neighborhood with how many driveways have spalling in them. Or in higher-end neighborhoods that have a large driveway and the potential for overworking the surface is significantly higher due to the volume of concrete being installed.

It is best to catch this as soon as possible before it is too late to repair. Many homeowners see the spalling occurring and just ignore it. Then when it gets really bad, they call a concrete contractor that informs them that the concrete needs to be replaced. You don’t need need to let it go until its too late.

There are systems available to fix this problem. Very beautiful systems that will provide you with a beautiful decorative driveway for far fewer costs than replacement. The secret here is to not let it go so far that replacement is your only option.

Concrete Restoration Systems and its parent company have been providing and specializes in driveway restorations and decorative concrete solutions in the Denver area for over 40 years and have an A+ rating with the BBB. Call us at 303-435-3334 and have one of our consultants come out and provide free consultation on your concrete needs.

Resurfacing Concrete – Best Alternatives

Why Concrete is Better Resurfaced vs Replaced

It has been said in Colorado that concrete driveways are built to last a lifetime, but there are certain seasonal conditions out of homeowners’ reach that may shorten its lifespan. Two commonly known concrete repairing techniques are concrete resurfacing and concrete engraving.

If the driveway is cracking, splitting or damaged in a different area, the best solution is to get it resurfaced through Concrete Restoration Systems, a Colorado-based concrete restoration company with over 40 years of experience. Resurfacing it will give it a thin layer on top making blemishes underneath invisible. Additionally, it will upgrade the look and appeal of your driveway. Because there are so many colors and patterns to choose from, it really is endless what any homeowner can do to their own driveway to make it more attractive. The easiest way to repair any driveway that has cracks and splits will be to cover it with a thin layer of liquid concrete that will cover all noticeable fractures. By doing it this way, the driveway will have a chance to bond the old concrete with the new concrete. Once the concrete is set and finished, the homeowner can also choose to place a quick layer of polish on it to create an attractive look to it making it decorative. There is an endless amount of finishes you can top off the concrete with.

Concrete engraving is a very creative way to resurface any driveway. What engraving allows is for any homeowner to add specific features to their driveway giving it a sharp look. What is even better about resurfacing by engraving is that any cracked or split concrete may actually help in the construction depending on the decoration desired. There are several different engravings that can be designed into the concrete. It all depends on what the homeowner chooses to do and the cost of engraving.

Another concrete repair method is called slab jacking. If there is an area in the concrete where it’s sinking due to erosion underneath it, this process allows the slab of concrete to be lifted and new soil and sediment to be placed underneath. This allows the concrete that was sinking to level the back up with the rest of the driveway. This method can save additional money as the homeowners just need to replace one spot instead of resurfacing the entire driveway.

If any homeowner wants to remove their acid stain on their concrete, Concrete Restoration Systems is the place to call. This company alone has a special diamond edge cutting machine that will literally scrape the stain off. Not only are these machines made in Canada but also there are only 75 In the whole United States.
